Help James Heal - UPDATE
6/4/2008 - Wed
A month has passed and we have settled very nicely in our home. Lots of work - making all the door ways ADA, painting the living room and bedroom, lots of redecorating and gardening. It has been a soothing and comforting experience to have a place call "home".
We've been truly blessed... beyond words could say.
*Arturo and Kevin has been unbelievably generous with their time, skills and money. We have a new flagstone in our backyard for wheelchair access, lots of new household items, food for busy days, new door trimmings and so much more.
*Dave - not only donated his time, knowledge and experience, but lots of medical supplies and rental of his wheelchair.
*Peggy and Roger - James' parents for all their time and loving and thoughtful gestures
*Mrs Long and Makani - for allowing us to stay in her house during our time of transition. Incredibly generous and thoughtful
*All the people who wrote and sent cards and their positive thoughts. We were touched by everyone of them..
And so many more...
Unsure how we may even pay it back... but we will definitely pay it forward.
We finally got insurance along with a primary doctor, and a list of referrals for specialty doctors. James should be starting PT/OT sessions again shortly.
And James has regained most of his weight back and is looking and feeling great - minus occasional and sometimes unbearable nerve pains in his legs.
He is now able to do most things by himself - transfering in and out of the wheelchair, bathing, eating, etc.
We look forward to everyday as a even better day.

Two weeks more. Days are passing by quick. The last couple of months seem like a blur. Can you believe it's only about 3 months? It feels like years at times...
Still lots of work and planning to do. We are definitely looking forward to more stability and freedom. Can't indulge too much on the net but good things will take place soon.

Hi everyone! I'm sorry I have not been able to update much. It gets a tad bit monotonous with the everyday "routine" right now. That's in addition to the misery of not having the type of internet access as we are often used to and often take for granted. Try go without it for a week or two, and you'll feel like ET flying in from another planet.
When I do have access, it's licking an ice cream cone on a summer day and I am guilty of dedicating the online accessibility to reading work emails, catching up with bills, as well as doing research on various topics, selling and buying various items.
Just a few updates - we are in the moving stages. We are excited as well as sad. Many changes but I know it's all for the better.
James is more active as time progresses. Transfers times have cut down by half *relieved* as we all improve on our "roles." The days are going fairly smoothly as well as pleasantly but the neuro pains are still ever present at nights.
We all hope they are good signs of nerves trying to repair themselves. We all have very positive hopes and dreams (literally) of James' full and complete recovery.
Thanks for your continuance in reading all of this. Please keeping supporting us and leaving comments. It's always nice to know you are there....

It's been more than a week since James left the rehab hospital and we are currently living at Makani's grandmother's house - Mrs. Long - who has so warmly welcomed us into her home and we are so grateful with her generous gesture.
It has been a learning experience as we adjust to living on our own. There is so much preparation and we need more medical supplies that we expected. We hope all the medical paperwork gets process quickly and we can finally have a "stable" life. That is the biggest craving we have right now.
As I previously wrote, there are SO many decisions to make. Currently, we are leaning towards moving back to Arizona so we can revert back to a somewhat normal life as James heals. Hawaii is such a wonderful place and we are sad to leave temporarily due to difficult housing and financial conditions. I know we will be back in the near future.
Will update as final decisions are made in the coming month.

More family in town! We spent a wonderful afternoon at the Nuuanu Botanical Garden with sis Brandy and her whole family - Bob, Jessica, Danille, and little Mikayla plus Peggy and me. The weather was just right and the Carne Asada spread the Swentys prepared was so yummy. Topped it with some Guinness and a nice cigar and we called it a great day.
Things are going as usual and we're in admist of planning for the future - do we move, do we stay? Where do we go, what will we do? Those are all still tough questions, so please pray we will make the right decisions that will work out best for everyone.

Sorry for the slow updates. Things have been hectic on my end and there seems to be endless things to do and not enough time to do it.
James is still doing great. He is now able to transfer and turn to his side by himself with minimal assistance. When he first arrived, it was maximum assistant so in two short weeks, we have improved greatly. His arms are much more flexible and have almost 100% range. He can now do most things himself - such as eating, brushing teeth, open bottles, reaching for buttons, etc - things we often take for granted in our every life.
Living at the rehab and depending on nurses and physical therapists to get things done on time and correctly can be tough. We don't want to take any chances which may inhibit us from moving forward in recovering full health.
Discharge date is proposed for March 22. We can't wait! Freedom rings.

Lots of great progress. James is really happy to hear from new and old friends who showed so much love and bought back so much good memories.
PT & OT sessions have been exhausting but getting better everyday as James' endurance progresses. We still need a lot of encouragement as physical therapy is very difficult and muscles have to be retrained and rebuild. Thanks to everyone for their ongoing support.

YAY James is officially admitted to the REHAB of the Pacific for the 4 weeks on full charity funds - thanks to the generosity of the rehab center. We are so grateful. The earlier we get started, the better. Things are going well and we'll inform you of the rehab training. They say it's like boot camp, so I'm sure it will be quite intensive!

Little changes but big improvments. Everyday is a little brighter. We have been busy with hospital paperwork. James hopes to go rehab in the next few days *Crossing fingers*
All surgeries are healing well. Arms are working much better now.
2/8/2008 - Fri
Surgery to right clavicle was postponed due to stomach issues, which came back negative on the CAT scan. So James is now in surgery with Dr. Murphy. Things are getting better everyday and the whole Queen's Medical Center crew is just awesome. We are so grateful for their expertise and professionalism.
James is excited to get moving and get started with physical therapy. He also wants a DOUBLE Cheeseburger once he can eat again - probably in 4 days or so :)
Angels are definitely on our side.
2/4/2008 - MonWe are officially out of ICU and James got his private "suite" on the 8th floor. Got a peek-a-boo mountain view and own bathroom and sink. Not too shabby. And the nurses are wonderful.A lot of great news. James says he is feeling GREAT today. ICU was a nightmare for him. I believe he was experiencing "ICU Pyschosis" where you hallucinate and dream like it was really real.
Today, he said he knows he gonna get better, and he has no doubt he will walk again soon. He's also eager to get started with therapy. For someone who is just "one big bruise" (as nurses called it), he is incredibly positive and confident.His surgeries (right elbow, left shoulder and lower spine) are healing nicely and he is cleared to sit up and his neck brace just came off. He is scheduled for his right shoulder/collar bone surgery on Thursday.
And for anyone that wants to know, he still looks handsome. I think when he heals and finishes intensive PT, you won't be able to tell he was ever injured.
2/3/2008 - Sunday
James, as sleepy and as drowsy as he is on Fentanyl, is rooting for the NY Giants this afternoon. We'll be watching the game in his room today. I feel he is getting stronger everyday and will probably "graudate" out of the ICU floor today. YAY. It gets quite depressing in there.
I also heard some positive and strong words from James in the past two days. I've been reading to him a bit, giving him massages, and helping him exercise with simple techniques so his joints don't lock up.
Our roommies are so awesome. Makani is working with Charles Djou to file a community petition so they can fix this "incorrectly" engineered road. Will and Donna are both so helpful, kind and generous with their time. So willing to lend a hand. My heart goes out to you guys. Bless you all..
I know James will be blown away by this support from his friends. I am setting up a PayPal account under my name due to his Insurance situation - I don't want to complicate it further. Also, I don't have his account info so it would take too long to set up. All donations will really help with getting the best PT and rehab services when he is done. Please be reassured that whoever makes a donation will recieve a note of confirmation and gratitude signed by James personally when he gets well.
another "whew." I've been praying and meditating alot to keep strong. We are not in control of the world but we must have faith that All Will Be Done.
All in the world is perfect and all is healed.

*whew* Surgeries are all over now.. Our hearts are now more settled and the tears have dried up a bit. We know James is strong and will heal fully. His strength and personality is still the same. With all the injuries, he is still physically stronger than me! He is so unique and lovable. What a guy. You just can't help but love him.
James' sister, Brandy, is now here and she is pulling us all together. She has the same strength as James so I know we're gonna be alright :)
We are looking to do fundraisers, seeking volunteers, physical therapists, massage therapists, lawyers, healers, donations, etc. There is so much to do and we need all the help we can get. We really appreciate your support in this temporaily difficult time.

James is doing well. The Reiki master is coming again late this afternoon. I am sure it will do wonders for his surgery tomorrow. Dr. Donovan is excellent and we have faith in the the healing presence.

James is in serious but stable condition, sedated for the next few days until his organs are healed. His parents are here with him. His arm surgeries went well. We had a a Reiki Master come in today and she did wonders to soothe James. She and her partner both felt a strong auora and have no doubt he will come back stronger than ever. She smiled and asked if I believed in Angels, because she felt a strong light over James and he is surrounded by angels watching over him and protecting him. She even did wonders to relief me. It was the most relief I've felt in days. They were also SOOO kind to offer this service as a gift to James. It was amazing. I am more confident than ever! Please keep sending positive thoughts. MIRACLES HAPPEN EVERY DAY. If anyone can do it, JAMES CAN.

James I have known you for a couple of years but I can tell you have always been a fighter and any challange that comes at you, you do not side step it. You are know facing one of your greats challenges in life. We are here for you and will be praying to help you through this and you will not be alone. In the short time I've known you, you have struck me as a very intelligent, VERY motivated, and all-around amazing, wonderful guy, always willing to help. Although we only met the one time, the fact you were on your way to see us, coming somewhere we invited you to and that we spoke just minutes before your accident, causes us to feel connected to the event and to you- and you are in our prayers daily.
There is no doubt you are loved and supported, and even strangers in the NRU community who have never met you-are sending you healing thoughts and prayers, and you better believe as soon as you are able to have outside visitors,there will be bikers coming to pay their respects to another biker-so get ready! :)
First off Layla thanks for doing this for my uncle and standing by him through this, my uncle means alot to me and it is really great for him to have someone like you in his life. We've known James for many years. He is a kind, strong person. He is very down to earth, and has the greatest sense of humor. As a few tears roll down my cheek, I also want to say he can play a mean game of washers!! We recently had the chance to meet Layla. She also is a wonderful person. Her and James are great for eachother. He couldn't ask for anyone better to be at his side at a time like this. I aslo know his mom will be by his side untill he recovers!! I know you will get better James! We're thinking about you every day. Love you all!

Hey Jamers.........Wow! I was put it a bit of shock when I receive a phone call from Brandy. I'm glad you are improving on a daily basis. And we both know who to thank for that. You are going to be fine, I know this because you are, I'm sure the same bullheaded, stubborn nephew I watched grow up. So, listen to your Doctors and keep your faith, everything happens for a reason, God does'nt close a door before he opens a window. We Love you, and wish we could be there, but the best I can do is pray and have faith.
